Call for Entries Accepted Artists
Artist Emily Schmidt
Los Angeles, California, USA
My paintings depict scenes of females caught in the middle of an action. At a glance the viewer might identify what they are doing, but the question of “why” remains. Recognizable imagery exists as a platform to symbolize and convey personal thoughts and struggles . Abstraction and absurdity are used to separate the viewer from a purely literal experience.
“Digging” is based on an experience I had every summer when my family would visit South Carolina. Like most children I loved digging holes at the beach, and I found that if you dug less than a foot in the sand, it would fill with water at the bottom. It baffled me that the solid land I stood on was completely saturated by the sea. This piece reflects find a search for that kind of unity.
