Women and Cars
In Women and Cars California artist Angela Johal combines multiple layers of original 60’s and 70’s images with other media to explore our culture’s view of the “ideal” woman who is expected to appear in most major car advertisements.
At a distance, the collage can be viewed as a pure abstract composition, but at a closer view, identifiable images begin to emerge: seductive women, submissive passengers next to dominant men, and women riding in the back seat when other men are present. The woman has become an object and has become the car. If you buy the car, you are buying the woman.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
