Beauty, It’s Not Pretty
In Beauty, It’s Not Pretty California artist Angela Johal combines original images dating back to the early 60’s and 70’s with other media to reflect on her childhood and her place in a culture where she feels displaced. She desires a physical and spiritual freedom from the constraints that are placed upon her as a child and now as a woman.
Multiple layers of images are buried within the piece. Eyes peer out at the curious viewer demanding a response. Feminine, youthful innocence and beauty is contrasted with haunting male masks juxtaposed to an innocent girl, a woman being swallowed by a fish, objects, meat, a woman clothed in bananas, a girl being led blindfolded, and images that show sexual exploitation.
