Mother may I?
When looking back into the past, I am fascinated by the fashions, the glamour, and the way of life. I am interested in the nostalgia I feel when thumbing through the photos and the questions that these feelings pose. I consider the way we approach contemporary pop culture icons now and the ways they appeared in the past.
I choose a figure from my library of photographs that I would like to depict in paint. I then intuitively marry the figure over a background made up of pattern created and inspired by my daily work, decorative painting. When taking the figure out of the photograph, I inherently dissect the narrative within the photograph and begin to create a new more open-ended story.
By excluding depth in the work I am creating a faux reality, playing with time and context. I am intrigued by the juxtaposition of the figure-ground relationship. The patterns I create add to the personality and story behind each individual, which challenge their artificial poses. By using gold leaf and other decorative methods I pay homage to these characters I am inspired by.
