Artist Statement
I grew up and spent most of my life in France. Since moving to the United States, I found myself loving to wander around at flea markets and antique stores. In fact, this is how I discovered vintage cabinet photos.
I’m very sensitive to the expression, the shape of the face, the body position and if the photo is damaged by time. If the photo establishes a connection with me, I buy it.

I am an artist painter and my artwork is focused on human figures. My goal is to make the body talk. For example, the flesh is a good vehicle of what’s happening inside, how we feel in our body and how we live it; this makes us human beyond flesh.
I was struggling with a painting when I had the idea to use these old cabinet photos for my purpose. I used hand-cut paper from anatomy and medical books directly on the photos in order to show what is inside outside. I chose the pieces carefully, paying attention to the scale, the shape and the color before putting everything together.
The collage adds a history, a character and reveals a new dimension of the photo. It makes this unknown person mine.
