Artist Stuart Lantry
Glendale, California, USA
My artwork is conceptually and aesthetically inspired by the decay I encounter every day on the street. I find beauty in the tangible history of deteriorating surfaces. The cracking paint, rust, scratches, torn advertisements and faded layers of graffiti bear the history of human presence. While my interest in the history held within the surface of a wall stems from my interest in street art and graffiti, the historical significance of walls themselves run as far back as history itself.
The first records of man and of culture were painted on cave walls, creatively and intuitively asserting mankind’s enduring presence onto the world. Since that fateful beginning, walls have acted as semi-permanent documents of culture and civilization, reflecting the social values, economic status, resources and beliefs of the people they shelter. My work considers the materiality of a wall, the possible functions of a wall and how people interact with the walls that surround them.I am also fascinated by the the intersection between the intensely vibrant, ego driven and subversive youth culture of graffiti with the urban deterioration, neglect and poverty often associated with graffiti-covered areas. The juxtaposition of ambition, frustration, hopelessness and humor found on city walls is an ongoing source of inspiration for my work. Hopefully my paintings inspire the viewer to consider the various motivations behind this modern, global and often criminal artistic movement in order to reframe graffiti in a context of beautiful destruction.
