Artist Statement
The experience of place, natural and man-made, wild and architectural, is an enduring theme in my work. Architecture creates space, hopefully with such a presence, though perhaps only people can give it that. The sand-swept streets of San Francisco’s beachside neighborhoods – with their low hanging fog in the night, or in the brief harsh sunshine afforded them in the afternoon hours – these places have a sculptural character, as well as brooding personality. California’s unique qualities of light can be quite pale and harsh, fitting the near desert conditions that prevail much of the year, though it breaks into forgiving moisture in its stormy months.
My drawing and painting are an attempt to capture the venerable reality of places like this, in light like this, from the odd significance of tiny details to broad abstract shadows. Places are the beads on the strings of our lives.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
