The Water’s Edge

While walking on the beach one afternoon, I discovered that green grasses in shallow water caused the wave forms to burst out with a brilliant green light. I knew I had to capture this quality in a painting.
I also wanted to push the relationship between warm and cool light by emphasizing the yellow light bouncing off the water’s surface and contrasting it with a blue shadow. I chose an extreme horizontal format to compliment the form of the wave and to keep the viewer’s eye locked into the subject matter. I titled it “Caleo” which means “to glow” in Latin.
