Artist Ian George
Morristown, New Jersey, USA
Mixed Media Collage
The assertively physical, richly textured works of Ian George are both commanding and careful, riding an uncomfortable balance between gravity and weight and another suspended reality. He has synthesized the disparate influences of Expressionism, Post-Impressionism, Art Brut, Bay Area funk art, assemblage, Dada, neo-Dada, Italian Mannerism, and Constructivism, claiming common ground with all these movements while remaining actively his own.
His paintings, existing both as surfaces and as objects, are saturated. They move from imagery and compulsivity into an overwhelming visual and emotional experience. There is a quality of digested debris and then a fight between chaos and order. Time spent with George’s art is a walk with the id. The results would be harrowing if not so frankly beautiful, or realized through such technical mastery.
George’s own analysis of others artwork is a key element in digesting influence. He can read a work, break it down, see it in the terms of critics and scholars; see its cultural significance or lack thereof. And, his instincts are perfect. He understands if other works matter or not, and if so, how and why.
When admitting his own works to their surface, and they are a combination of confession and direction, he discovers his unique voice, often screaming messages that others in the field whisper or ignore. In George’s own words, each piece is “violated, pushed, layered, and finally solved”.
