A woman stands in front of a stained glass window. The lights from above illuminate parts of her hair. Framed by the vertical lines within the windowpane, the stillness of the figure is contained within the boundaries of picture plane. Reminiscent of Victorian portraits, the woman’s outfit seems like a clash between old and new.
The picture recalls, for me, Flemish portraiture, in which the figure is still and rendered meticulously, and by which the dramatic lighting from above and behind is meant to indicate the presence of spiritual beings.
Our detachment from the figure further magnifies the fact that the model is a representation of a type, empty of individual characteristics and functioning as a kind of mannequin or an object to display in the storefront.
