In “Victorian Portrait”, I’m working with the connections between high art and high fashion, a theme that is repeatedly revived through contemporary fashion photography. In this painting I am interested in the stiffness and frontal quality of the pose.
By emphasizing the hypnotic entanglement of the model’s hair, I am drawing contrast to an otherwise calm and aristocratic figure, thus challenging our expectation of her character. As is common in countless religious icon paintings, I have heightened the sense of luminosity within her skin. It’s as though the light source were emitting directly from the figure.
Her eyes and hair are equated with the gemstones, feather necklace and bracelets that adorn her body. The painting explores the function of symbols, status, and representation within high fashion while also examining the artificiality of these elements.
