Intaglio and Lithograph “Spiral Experience” by Tatiana Potts is a combination of four images; a spiral staircase inside the Lighthouse in Hunting Island, SC, a ceiling in High Museum in Atlanta and the shadows from our trip back to my home in Slovakia. They are viewed from different angles in order to create an illusion of imaginary three-dimensional spaces.
Through the inclusion of the architectural details, in my mind, I can revisit the places that I experienced and develop a sense of place that is personal, but the composition is also open to different interpretations based on the viewers’ perception of what is being observed. The bold shapes of shadows are a symbol of my experience and presence in this newly created place.
The detailed lines of spiral staircase are engraved by cutting into the zinc plate with an engraving tool called a burin. The soft transitions are achieved with aquatint method. The drawings of figures and shadows were created on limestone and photo litho plate. All images are printed on top of each other to accomplish multilayered compositions.
When looking at the composition the viewer is prompted to make connections or interpretations about a place’s location and perhaps speculate about the conceptual link among all the images. My hope is to entice the viewer to notice these details and thereby create his/her sense of place in viewed composition.
