Portraits Call for Entries Accepted Artists
Artist Marc Schimsky
I was born in Brooklyn, NY, but I was raised on Long Island. I’m a product of a middle-class suburban family. My life was normal…even rather boring and then my father died suddenly about a week before my 13th birthday. Everything changed abruptly. My childhood vanished. I became an adult over night – a “parentified child.” Filling my father’s shoes was an impossible task. I missed being a kid. I learned that life is fleeting. People come and go. Time passes quickly. Events occur in a heartbeat. So I became fascinated by the ephemeral nature of life and the passage of time at an early age. Today, I create artworks that capture and attempt to preserve experiences and the personalities that inhabit them. I like to collect antiques. I love old things especially vintage photos. That is why I enjoy probing the psychology of my subjects by freeze-framing them mid-stream in a familiar activity. Recently, I’ve been trying to capture in my work that certain sense of a moment lost or of an encounter missed. Ultimately, my intention is to reveal something mysterious, quirky or magical about a person, a moment, or an encounter.
