My work is an exploration of the dynamics of human interaction. While I recognize that each viewer sees my work differently, the decisions I make in painting represent the way I view the subject, and through deliberate neutrality in expression I allow viewers to find additional and individual significance. Thus I allow viewers to see what I see and what I don’t see. My arrangement of composition, inspired by the subject, combined with paint and canvas reflects the personality of the subject, the viewer, and myself.
In this painting I created tension by using a split warm and cool background and by positioning the subject so that she appears to be gazing out of the frame, allowing the viewer to question the expression and wonder what she is looking at or what she is thinking. The viewer must reconcile these tensions to participate in the dynamic of my work.
That a certain pose, composition, or lighting causes a viewer to feel any way about my work reveals much more about him or herself than it does about me or my artwork. This is, I believe, as it should be. I seek not to be an assigner of concept, but rather a facilitator for meaning.
