Ordinary Vistas #17
The work explores the language of scale within photography. The subjects of the photographs are scaled down models that represent ordinary objects. They are ingrained in our memory and our experience therefore we comfortably accept them. Yet, the imperfections and manufacturing flaws of the miniatures’ distance them from the “real.”
While each of the objects in these images is not exactly as we remember them they are easy to read. Something in the details and/or the environment surrounding them is undermining the plausibility of the image. We can readily see that the world around them is out of proportion.
We know that a bench seat is supposed to be about knee high; we know how our body fits on a staircase. Projecting ourselves into the image, either the scale of the objects or the world surrounding them will feel correct both cannot be correct at the same time. We are forced to choose what we want to identify with. Are we big or are we small? We have fallen down the rabbit hole with Alice.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
