The Tortured Artist
Artist Laura Fischer
London, United Kingdom
Intricate emotions can be hard to communicate and often words are unable to translate the depth of those feelings. Our body, however, has the ability to express what no words can, which is why my work focuses on body language. By depicting my body, I am actually depicting my emotions. Through my self-portraits, I am able to free myself from the soreness I otherwise keep inside of me.
This particular piece conveys a conflict between body and mind. It was created from the struggle of wanting and having the opportunity to be a ballerina, but not being able to, as a disease in my back did not allow me to dance anymore. This inner battle can be sensed through the tense position of the body, the roughness of the drawing and the aggressiveness of the charcoal.
