Artist Statement
My work is intuitive and the direction it takes is often surprising, even to me. I am deeply moved by aboriginal dreamtime paintings and the influence is apparent in my current study. I make it my own through meditative process. Shapes convey the density of matter, and dots convey the energy of spirit as it weaves through all things. Color becomes a vehicle for emotional connection.
My personal spirituality is earth-centered. I am also trained as an herbalist. My first introduction to herbs as medicine was taught by a Muskogee Creek elder, which led to intensive study with many teachers over time. I now work directly with the spirit and energy of plants. It is from that well of life experience that this series of paintings emerged.
All that said, any piece I produce has to resonate with me as a pure visual experience completely separate from any intent, spiritual knowledge or influence. The point is that spirit, matter and Art are all intertwined, and what resonates in one world is inevitably echoed or mirrored in the others.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
