Flowers and Rain
I have used fabric scraps as a collage medium for over 40 years. Earliest examples of my work were cartoon doodles on burlap. Over the years these gradually became more sophisticated, developing into representational pictures of people and places. For the last twelve years I have presented my textile work as quilts.
I wish to communicate concepts of impermanence, tapping into the source, relationship, observation, and gratitude. I enjoy working in both abstract and representational styles.
“Flowers and Rain” was created for a show called Mimic the Masters. I did my best to embody the work of Gustav Klimt, using his love of extreme decoration in flower and wave motif as well as his attraction to the female form and exaggerated gesture.
I display my work in art and quilt shows across the country. I hope that you will visit my web site to see examples of work in the style of Joan Sowada. You will see candid views of people, unusual perspective, and strong use of light and shadow.
