What attracts me most to identity is the potential scope of its contents. An identity never seems to be comprised of a sole attribute, or aptly represented by a single moment in time. On the contrary, it seems to be constantly changing and accumulating new content. I try to mimic the accumulative development of identity’s contents by creating monumental portrait paintings. I do so by systematically layering mark upon mark of paint on a very large surface. The large surface allows me to exploit the physicality of paint and an extreme density of marks. When viewed from a close distance, the marks create a visual matrix that exposes both the past and present of my process. The superficial illusion of the subject fractures into an accumulation of layers, color, texture, shapes, and lines. When viewed from afar, the process becomes less apparent and the subject more so. In their essence, my paintings are an attempt to represent the external flesh of the human form along with the accumulative content that occupies it.
