Do I see what I see? Am I ever still? Is a still photograph a revelation or an illusion? If I purposely move the camera when shooting am I an artist or a fool? I have been trying to answer these questions, waving my camera through long exposures, reviewing the results, adjusting settings, trying to capture not life, but being alive.
In these photographs the idea of young children excited and afraid, running through the woods, appeared when a tree’s hollow became a witch’s oven. The digital images have not been post-processed other than minor darkroom-like adjustments. They are motion photographs rather than stills.
I was born in Chicago, raised and live in Phoenix. My father gave me a very good camera when I graduated from grade school. I suspected later it may have been stolen merchandise. As karma would have it the camera was stolen from me by a hitchhiker who drove across the country with me when I was twenty. It was filled with the most amazing photographs.
