Villa of the Mysteries 3
When I was seven or eight years old my family visited Pompeii, where the adult men were shown certain mysterious murals while the women and children waited in the ancient street. My circumspect father never told me what they were. Though I’ve seen Roman frescoes in reproduction, and have a number of books about them, I still long to be in their presence.
These works on paper combine acrylics, printmaking inks, and graphite to celebrate the iconic splendor of men, marrying the extraordinary faces of “ordinary” people to classic themes in an attempt to recapture those unseen paintings, those vanished ancient lives, and to preserve ours. No one knows exactly what the ritual portrayed in the Pompeiian Villa of the Mysteries represents.
I am always hoping to make something beautiful.
