Artist Statement
Creating botanical illustrations became a passion of mine after studying the works of 16th century artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. My “You Are What You Eat” series involves extensive research and creative planning composing the animals incorporating their food source and habitat.”Wolf Pack of Four” was created from the controversy concerning the hunting of wolves in the Rocky Mountains. A wolf pack travels in a line, although the alpha wolf might not be in the lead, he IS the leader. In this painting the first wolf is disappearing (extinction?) while the last wolf is being created (continuation of the species?). This painting is NOT a political statement, but an educational illustration to encourage discussion and exploration of the subject among the viewers. My objective as an artist is to educate while presenting botanical subjects in a manner which encourages the viewer(s) to observe the animal(s) with new insights and to explore the painting with new visual and mental awareness.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
