Fluted Columns on the Colorado
I have also called this painting “Tapeats Fluting” but some viewers may not be familiar with the Tapeats sandstone layer that appears throughout the Grand Canyon. John Wesley Powell in his explorations of the canyon referred to such fluting as rock “fretted with strange devices”. Pebbles in small eddies eat down through layers of rock along the sides of the Colorado River. The resulting polished runnels and columns remind me of the Hindu temples I saw in India.
