My landscapes have a dreamlike, moody quality, as if the viewer is experiencing the world from that twilight state that is neither waking nor sleeping. My images are an archetypal vision of nature and my forms arise from a subconscious processing of the natural world. Color and form are layered over a “psychological ground” giving the work a complexity and emotional resonance for the viewer. My work is a view into an idealized world of color and light.
My images seem to communicate the essence of a thing, expressing what is eternal in the human experience. At the same time, it possesses a fragile, almost existential quality that is accomplished through the mingling of light and shadow. In my pieces, light seems to emerge triumphantly from a ground of darkness, conveying a feeling of victory and inspiration. These elements convey a luminosity in my images that go beyond common daily experience.
My work reflects my many landscapes of residence including California, Utah, and Maryland. My recent works in include impressionist and near abstractions of the landscape that capture the interplay of light and mood. These landscapes use subjective color to convey the psychological experience of the natural world.
