Exploration of human nature, specifically as a woman, are common themes in Gabriella’s work. This is done through the incorporation of the human mouth. Using it to represent our mental capacities and the extent of our civility in terms of it’s use in complex language and expression of thought. Yet, also depicting this iconic feature as a devouring animalistic organ with implied sensuality.
Miniatures are also used in this series for their representational qualities – their meaning being derived only from their life size counterparts and thus exploring our existence in terms of our own representational qualities. Specifically, a miniature chair is displayed as a symbol of civility and domestic life.
The red lips are used to symbolize the red curtains of a stage depicting the performance quality while also alluding to the more physical nature of the mouth. With the chair facing the viewer it directly engages and labels the viewers as an acknowledged audience – prompting contemplation of our roles in daily life.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
