Call for Entries Accepted Artists

I met Raga in the audience of a TEDx event that I was working on in January 2013. What attracted me most about her was how at ease she was with herself. She may be a woman in her 70s, but her artistic expression of self, style and colour transcended all concepts of age. I knew immediately I wanted to draw her.
Two days later, Raga traveled to my home in North London where we spent the afternoon talking about life, family, philosophy and spirituality. Raga is very interested in the idea of intergenerational women’s groups where young people can benefit from the wisdom of their elders and the elders can speak frankly about what they have learned in life about love, work, family, even sex.
When Raga saw her portrait she said that both a sense of strength and sadness had been captured in the image and that she felt both these traits to be very present in herself. In my portraiture I try to juxtapose the sense of power against fragility because I feel the intersection of these traits to be central to the lives of many people I encounter.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
