I grew up with the soft whispers of breezes dancing through forests and across tall wheat fields. I take solace and comfort in the sound of raindrops on the roof of my studio. I connect to the world through wide open spaces when the closeness of living in the city gets to be too much, when I can no longer hear myself think and I crave the fresh air, peace and inspiration of wild spaces.
I stumbled upon ‘Lonely Road’ just beyond Shaniko Pass, on an empty highway that had been hit by an arctic storm. As I raced by old farmhouses, sagebrush sat white and lifeless. The few trees that popped up along the desolate landscape shimmered with ice in the last light of the day.
Although it would surely drop to well below freezing that night, I slowed the car and parked at a wayside to watch the day end…my soul breathing in the gratifying solitude found in Oregon’s high desert country, as the evening’s first stars twinkled in the frozen indigo sky.
