With the mask series, I am exploring issues of ageing and perception. Using an old woman’s Halloween mask, I am trying on the persona of a potential future self, but also looking to find beauty in something many people fear or turn away from.
The self portraits are shot with a Rollei through close up lens attachments with a very narrow depth of field, which imposed an intimate relationship with the camera during the shooting process. The negatives are exposed on torn photographic paper through scratched acetate and bits of hair from the mask to create texture. They are then toned, and reassembled in the form of quilts.
I?ve been focused on process oriented art forms in my practice because I like seeing the evidence of the hand in the final work, and I enjoy taking advantage of the opportunities for happy accidents along the way. I try to create images that, while inspired by real things, also exist outside of that context and occupy something closer to a dream, or a memory.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
