Artist Statement
Still life painting has always been fascinating to me. Specifically, the unique formal properties of the food items. When I first started incorporating processed foods into my work, a whole world of possibilities opened up to me. I found the colors of the processed foods to be dynamic and varied – almost like painting flowers.
Surprisingly, the processed foods seem to possess intrinsic scenic qualities, which weren’t as strong in other still life subjects I painted. For example, the piece in this show “Sunrise” evokes clouds and a sun. This wasn’t planned, but after I finished the title screamed out to me.
I think this is only possible when using these strange otherworldly objects – both whimsical and uniquely American.
