Artist Statement
For the longest time, I have delighted in the interplay between words and visuals. Perhaps it’s my preoccupation with pop culture, my fascination with cartoons, or my experience in the advertising world. Whatever the reason, I have now created hundreds of these pieces on various themes—from m&m’s, to flip-flops, to cowboys, and shrimp. I call them Visual Riddles. In each case, I create a bold image of a famous American icon or brand, which is painted over a list of names or thoughts. The lists are admittedly subjective, and are often less than linear.
In the case of Let’s Just Call Them Small, the list covers those of us who are small in height, but tall in stature. The realistic watercolor painting provides a delectable anchor for small achievers.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
