Artist Statement
Creativity is a distraction; it eases the mind and the body. Eating, a necessary but painful chore, nourishes the mind visually and the body. I am Mindful of cycles, seeds, beans, cysts, illness, fertility, infertility and then… the tests; the waiting. The porcelain-like surface of a white bean and a bean-sized growth inside the body that could end life. Yet a bean is a life; it is hope.I demand of myself, to continue to see the positive beauty in the simple, seemingly banal, often unnoticed, things around me. Notice everything. Aesthetically inspired by a fascination for Victorian botanicals, with the painterly potential and ultimately, the qualities of photography. For me, a paint brush dissatisfied me, so I picked up a camera and the painting began.
“IV” from the “Feast” Series distracted me during a personal crisis that comprised of not knowing, just hoping, fearing and waiting. The bean lives on and so do I. This image is straight from the camera and I do not have Cancer.
