Riding to Szczebrzeszyn
Acrylic and watercolor on gessoed paper
In the last few years I have developed a fascination with farms, fields, crops, and lifestyles of physical labor. During a recent working trip in Poland, I spent a lot of time traveling on buses through the countryside. Gazing for hours at the landscape whizzing past the windows was one of my most memorable experiences in the foreign country. I longed to walk through the yards of apple trees and around the rectangular, golden fields, inspecting the colors and textures. At the same time, viewing the environment from a moving bus allowed only a stream of brief encounters. The process was exhilarating.
Varied application of layers, speed, and direction of marks reflect shifts in mood, the animation of the natural world, and the passing of time through a space. The speed of movement suggests particular forms of transportation, a perspective that is new to my work. Veils of color refer to a shadow or a glimpse of foliage. More distinct marks and details suggest tree trunks or other objects that are farther away from the viewer, hence passing by slower. The paint glides, skips, and flicks across the surface of the paper. This triptych presents a snapshot of an impressionable journey in an unfamiliar place.
