A Winter’s Day on Lake Brewer
My friend, who had recently retired to a cabin in the woods, had invited me to visit for lunch and a short hike afterwards so that I could take in the lake view adjacent to the property. When I arrived, she was immediately apologetic for the turn in the weather. It was overcast, drizzly and cold. I, however, thought the stark palette was refreshing and immediately considered a large, analogous landscape that wiould envelope the viewer. To keep the interest in a painting of this size, without the use of a full palette, I played with different textures and values until I found the right combination to evoke the atmosphere I was striving to create.
This work, with its scrapes, drips and blotches, reflects the day as I remember in my mind’s eye, and really, that is all a memory truly is. We deposit a moment, frozen in time, and when we make a withdrawal, the reinterpretation is framed within the context of our emotionally – hinged perceptions.
