Artist Riley, A Arthur
Fine Art Photography
Growing up in American Samoa, the third wettest place in the world mold grows on everything including photographs. Losing negatives and photographs for so many years gave me the obsession of documenting. That dedication will take me to Slovenia this fall where I will begin a Fulbright Scholarship documenting and photographing under represented people. I have a degree in photography and another in theatre, and find that my theatre training heavily informs my fine art photography. My fine art photography is nothing like my journalistic photography, instead there are elements of fantasy, they are more colorful and playful.
As an artist with my fine artwork, I work in narratives or shared themes in a series. “Smoke” was a project that offered a departure from my signature style. Rather than tell a story I shot concise stylized scenarios that shared an aesthetic of both smoke as prop and background. Over eighty smoke bombs were used by series completion. This image- “Fire Eyes”- was created thanks to my brave model who suffered through six smoke bombs in order to capture this shot.
