Artist Vladimir Marcu
London, Alabama, Canada
“Kublai asks Marco, ‘When you return to the West, will you repeat to your people the same tales you tell me?’ (…) Marco says (…) ’It is not the voice that commands the story: it is the ear.’” Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities We might generalize that it is not the painter that commands the painting: it is the eye. It could be the eye of the viewer, or that of the painter.
While I design and build a picture, I switch very frequently between the role of painter, and that of viewer. The viewer will always dictate to the painter what ends up on the support. The viewer is a very fickle character. If the picture takes several weeks or months to develop, then the painter has to change the picture many times.
In this process, of finishing the picture, there is always a struggle between the painter who just wants to finish the painting, and the viewer who always sees something different. I like to use acrylic paints because I can layer them indefinitely, to satisfy the viewer. The layer of varnish tells the viewer that their time is up, and the painting is now finished.
The title usually comes last, once the viewer has figured out what the picture is about. The painter has nothing to do with the process of finding a title. “What is the emotion expressed by this picture, not just by the face alone?” The only interpretation I could come up with was “Guilt,” although I am hardly satisfied by it. Thank you for being my viewers, and now, my readers.
