Artist Nebyou Chaka
Los Angeles, California, USA
Blank austerity, cool resolve, moody self-indulgence, facile egotism are completely absent from the collection of work by the young artist, Nebyou T. Chaka Instead, the viewer is invited to revel in exuberant color, yield to serene compositions, and become affected with the pleasure this artist clearly takes in his work
Since graduating with a degree in painting from Addis Ababa University of Fine Art, Nebyou has never looked back. He flung himself completely into his work, becoming a full-time studio artist; his paintings attracted a cadre of admirers who collected his work.
Some of his works are seldom abstracted from anything specific in the material world, although they often contain references to landscape, and other memories from his experience. Above all, he uses emotive color, abstract shapes and surface texture to create visual metaphors for contemporary life. To him as an artist, all the formal aspects of panting, brush marks, colors, tones, layers of paint, surface texture, become means of addressing his experience of contemporary life. He is fearless in his juxtaposition of hues, as long as the relationship pleases the eye
These works were inspired from his day to day life experience, culture, emotion, and felling’s in part, by the availability of materials: wood panels salvaged from a cabinet shop are coated with glue and then heavily gessoed to permit surface incisions. The narrow color palette is enlivened with whimsical symbols borrowed from Amharic script and elsewhere. The overall impression is one of ancient, universal messages arrested in present time.
