Thread Experiment 3
My work tends to differ conceptually based off of which dimension it exists in. While working two-dimensionally, I focus mainly on naturalism in a portrait and also embrace the inclusion of outside materials. I often utilize wood, for its elegant rigidity, as well as thread, specifically embroidery thread, to symbolize domesticity.
Three dimensionally, I feel more comfortable expressing opinions, experiences, and nostalgia conceptually. Being raised by people outside of the realm of American culture significantly affects my studio practice.
Sculpturally, I often compare and contrast differing personal cultures that I have witnessed and embraced while borrowing imagery from experience and memory. I also have a tendency to mock certain ridiculous personal experiences and aspects of contrasting culture, be it American, Indian, or African-American.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
