I’m crazy about film noir. The look, the aesthetic, the wisecracks. The thugs, the mugs. The scoundrels and saps and bad girls. Deceit, fear, wreckage, bleakness, disillusionment, despair, desperation, cynicism, pessimism, and alienation – they’re somehow so delicious.
This acrylic painting belongs to a series called “Bitter Little Worlds” and combines film noir dialogue – so bitingly devoid of social niceties and hypocrisies – with paper dolls and 1940s-1950s imagery to create a blackly comic story. The colors shine brightly, but the contents of people’s minds are oh so dark. The tilted perspective can make one feel a little nervous and askew.
My work includes sculptures in clay, dioramas, and children’s book photo illustrations. Sitting on the floor, creating this series of intermedia montages on canvas with paint and paper and scissors and glue is an elemental, schoolgirl pleasure. I’m also a novelist and, as a storyteller, I love to use text to draw the viewer into the worlds of my visual work.
