Call for Artists Accepted Artists
Gainesville, Florida USA
My work is about the social construction of gender. Hopeful is both organic and inorganic which represents the bridging of nature and technology. Inspired by the cyberpunk classic “Ghost in the Shell” and Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto I use the armor of technology to empower the human form.
I take the idea that our society views nature as inherently feminine and the technological as masculine to create figures imbued with technology. This creates different tensions in the figure that stem from their outer appearance.
My inspirations also include elements of classical figure sculpture, science fiction, Japanese animation, and video games. By using clay, an ancient material to create technological figures, I tie the work back to the classical realm of sculpture but retaining contemporary imagery. The idea of gender and construction is examined through the dual natured elements within this piece.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas.
