Nude In A Pink Dress
I’m from New York, where my formal art education began at the high school of Art and Design. Later, I was accepted to the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Then, I attended the School of Visual Arts, the Art Students League, the New School of Social Research and the National Academy of Design.
Specifically, I was born in the South Bronx. The South Bronx was and is the cultural equivalent of living just outside the castle walls. I received a split education – one side, an in-depth saturation of art and culture, the other side a master’s degree “from the school of hard knocks”.
You could deny one or the other worlds, but I found the effort to blend those life experiences, has deeply influenced many of my collages. In particular, my collage, “Nude In A Pink Dress”, was the result of my knowledge of art history and the raw street images I saw every day, as a kid in the Bronx.
In working with the figure, I try to balance the traditional aspects of the nude – theme, composition, integration of form, into a unified whole. At the same time, I consider the world I live in – billboards, posters, magazines and in your face eroticism, as a means to create a new image for a classical theme.
