Artist Michelle Robinson
Los Angeles, California, USA
I am interested in bringing intimacy and animation to structures that are ubiquitous but often invisible or ignored. Much of my recent work has been focused on the Los Angeles River and its surrounding neighborhoods. The river takes many forms as it passes through the city, from concrete wastelands to semi natural wilderness. Throughout its length, it occupies a sort of no-man’s land, sharing its path with industrial areas, railroad tracks, and power lines; many people who live in the city aren’t really aware of its existence. I am interested in the interplay between the natural and the man-made, and in the river’s role as a conduit for power, communication, waste, and life. I am fascinated by entropy, and the way in which nature inevitably reclaims that which is abandoned.
I’ve been interested in methodical, process oriented art forms for some time because I like seeing the evidence of the hand in the final work, and I enjoy taking advantage of the opportunities for ‘happy accidents’ along the way. These pieces begin as black and white photo collage; some are made up of as many as 15 different photographs taken at different points along the river, then put together to try and create a new, cohesive single image. Layers of fabric, paper, mediums, xerox transfer, and plant matter found along the river are added to create age, texture, depth, and a sense of time. Finally, several oil glazes add color and act as the final unification pass for the image.
