12 Gods, 12 Disciples, 12 Tribes
I have always loved old, decaying things. And especially old photos. After 10 years as a painter, I’ve found my outlet for these loves in mixed media. Originally from Detroit I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area…greatly influenced by its eclectic, experimental, and accepting culture.
In my first mixed media series, I brought together torn fragments of old wedding photos, thrown away cardboard, and gold fiberous paper. With acrylics and charcoal, I created surfaces that resemble rust and peeling plaster. I mixed in the ancient symbology of the number 12 – both the numerals in different languages, and it’s meaning throughout history and in different cultures. And I experimented in a playful, intuitive way with these elements, allowing my instincts to guide me. My intent was to create a visual vocabulary for the cycle of decay, transformation and rebirth.
