Fragments is a collection of new photographic compositions by Abigail Denniston. Inspired by the neuro scientific explorations of physician and author Dr.Oliver Sacks in The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat (1986) her work is an investigation into human bodily expression.
It explores and emphasizes the importance of the communicative power of the mask that externalises our interior dialogue and our intricate ability the read the slighest of gesture. By cutting negatives and misaligning fragments of the face or body as parts of a perceived whole a disruption is created.
Echoing Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man in terms of perfect scale and proportion she combines the circle inside a square motif with a series of mutilated fragments of the face and body. These scanned negatives are arranged to destablilise a familiar visual experience of a portrait and aspire to manifest a tension between the viewer and subject.
