Call for Artists Accepted Entries
San Francisco, California, USA
I met Gurmeet when I was buying art supplies at his shop. Gurmeet decided to set up an art shop after spending most of his life working as an acoustic engineer. We drank tea upstairs while I took photos and he told me stories of growing up in India and East Africa and his subsequent quest for knowledge and peace.
Gurmeet suffers from severe arthritis and his hands are knotted and painful. He is only sixty and believes he will only live a few more years but talks about death with a strong degree of acceptance. I tried to capture his spiritual nature by interlacing luminous colors through his skin, turban and tunic and by using white on white as the main color.
The last time I saw Gurmeet he told me that there was only one kind of knowledge: experienced knowledge. If we only know something intellectually, but do not act on it, then we do not have knowledge at all. This is something that has changed me since our encounter.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas.
