Philip Clift’s statement concerning his photograph entitled the Hidden Orchid The orchid was a gift from my wife. It is not native to my home in central New York. Its exotic coloration and the unique structure of the petals made it a natural subject to photograph. I wondered why it evolved those petals and leaves. It was compelling, almost mysterious to me. Yet after a while it became familiar. It sits on a window sill. It was transformed. It became ordinary. Did the photograph capture the orchid’s mystique? How was I changed?
