One Fine Day
From a time years ago, using my markers at just 4 years old to draw an exceptional 5 legged cat, I have been fascinated with art and the endeavor to recreate reality and all of the exceptional detail and beauty it entails. Born in Greensboro, NC and raised across the country from Cedar Rapids, IA to Seattle, WA, I had opportunities my whole life to observe nature constantly from one coast to the other and have found the world around me ever intriguing. Taking art classes throughout high school and college level courses led me to begin and run a business doing faux finishing and murals in homes and businesses all over the country. My desire to improve my mural skills ultimately steered me to choose to take a course with world renowned artist Dru Blair at the Blair School of Art. There I found a new style and techniques that appealed to me on a much deeper and skillful level so I jumped at the chance to study directly under him long term and have been developing my abilities under his tutelage for the past 6 years. This is where I discovered my true artistic passion: realism and photo realism. Acquiring another job with the school I currently act as the lead demonstrations instructor at the Blair School of Art for all the classes we currently teach. Through the years I have developed my own methods and techniques which allow me great freedom to create the images that are my personal expression of the beauty that I see when I am looking for my next project. I employ the use of an airbrush to create the subtle nuances that nature and my realistic style requires, paint brushes, colored pencils, and many blending, removing and scratching tools are used to create the special effects and detail present in my images. My main medium is a fluid acrylic paint that can be sprayed on or brushed on. This medium is applied in layering techniques to achieve an optical mixing of the colors on the surface, which is necessary to create the effects that are so important in my efforts for the visual depth in the paintings. When I’m looking to create a new piece I first will see it in my mind as I walk through gardens searching for the perfect flower begging to be given an intimate portrait and voice of its own. I hope that you can hear their voices as clearly as I did and it brightens your day.
