Be Still Life
Call for Entries Accepted Artists
My ideas and experiences are the spark that inspired my creations. I use nature, color and objects as tools to convey a message of hope, faith and love. I was born in Cartagena, Colombia and was raised in a very religious family. I was taught the concept, but not the essence of spirituality. As a child growing up in my hometown and as an adult when I moved to the U.S. 22 years ago, the nature of the human condition has intrigued me and has made me look within myself, finally discovering my devotion and mission in life. While painting, I can express myself and communicate my thoughts. Through my talent I aspire to improve the world in which I live in and somehow, make it a better place to live. This is who I am. I can’t conceive myself doing anything different.
I have worked professionally as a full time artist for about 20 years. I started attending Beaux Art School in my hometown when I was 11 years old. I have also been to college as a fine arts student in Georgia State University, Miami Dade College and University of Miami. Currently, I am back in UM, taking Art History courses, which have sharpened my judgment, broaden my perspective and strengthen my aptitude to use my childhood and my life as a loving wife and mother as the real inspiration of my work.
My pieces are full of vibrant colors with textures that enrich their content. I use oils, because I believe it is a very noble medium. I love its brightness and smooth consistency, which lets me manipulate the paint in many ways. I also love the slow drying time and the durability of oils: With the appropriate technique, works in oil will last a lifetime. As a mature artist, I am exploring abstraction, not leaving behind realism and trompe l’oeil. I use symbols that express reality and fantasy, which come together to tell a story of human nature, of our perfection and imperfections. My mission is accomplished when my art influences the viewer. Ecstasy is the expression of the viewer’s face when it starts glowing with emotion.
