Artist Statement
I have a series of works created in response to various social issues and concerns. The disappointment I feel when I observe fellow citizens who are apathetic towards the freedoms we enjoy in America often prompts me to create new art. This feeling was certainly the impetus behind A Show of Hands.
My goal was to create a bold statement about the importance of voting, including a bit of history to remind us of the struggles inherent in gaining the right to vote. The constitutional amendments covering voting are included in the background, almost in their entirety. I encourage viewers to consider seriously all the benefits we receive from the Constitution, simply by being citizens.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
