Kate and Ann Barbara Russell (after George Romney)
This painting is one of a series that considers the effect of digital devices on our lives. I have copied diverse art historical sources from El Greco to Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun and created a double portrait by inserting a contemporary young person that bears a remarkable resemblance to the original sitter. The contemporary model is absorbed with their electronic devices.
I enjoy the dichotomy of the laborious techniques of the ‘old masters’ contrasted so directly with the digital instantaneity of the present day subjects. I am also commenting on the vast difference in lifestyles despite the similarity in genetics. This series, entitled “after”, will comprise from 18 to 22 paintings and is booked for several solo shows in 2015.
