My mother was invisible. My father was a liar. I remember fishing on the bank of a stock pond and going on service calls with the most absorbing man I ever knew. My father had an easy laugh and captivated his listeners. He was a good father. His personal narrative was filled with adventure and intrigue. I hung on his every word. This was a man who could make sense of anything mechanical, build a whole house completely by himself and build confidence in his only daughter by allowing her to work beside him. It was the cumbersome burden of time that revealed the truth and the lies and my innocence lay in ruin. My work is a silent reflection of the happiness of a small child and the veracity of the truth. My parents are old now, not as dirt, but to the age when infirmities set in and slow their forward motion. My mother can’t remember immediate day-to-day activities or events. She has been moved to an assisted living facility even though her health is reasonably good for eighty-one. Sometimes she is angry. My father is on oxygen, which is ironic, a man who seldom sits in one place very long. My work tends to be influenced by the upsurge of family emotions that this causes. Realism drives my concept, being pulled into the fray of my mother and father’s past experiences. I listen and envision the people, places and especially, the things. It’s the passage of time that tells the story. My father’s stories are based on an alternate reality, while my mother’s are rich in detail.
